Nationwide power outage: Movianto Spain passes endurance test

Emergency power supply ensures continuous operation and quality of stored goods

It was exactly 12.33 pm on 28 April 2025 when electric power went out in almost all of Spain and Portugal. The regular power supply to the central Movianto warehouse for the Iberian Peninsula in Numancia de la Sagra (Toledo) also collapsed. It was not until the following morning, around 12 hours after the outage began, that the power supply in Spain and Portugal was largely restored. ‘The power outage was an endurance test for our business continuity plan,’ says Javier Gómez, Operations Director Movianto Spain. ‘And we are very pleased that we passed this test so well.’

The two emergency power generators, which are designed to supply power to the fully temperature-controlled central warehouse with its almost 40,000 pallet bays in the event of a power failure, started up immediately. They secured the power supply in the warehouse and in the administration offices during the entire blackout period. The tanks of the diesel generators were refilled the next day.

According to Gómez, the nationwide power outage provided three key insights. ‘Firstly, our risk prevention systems made it possible to guarantee an uninterrupted supply of medicines. Secondly, we were able to guarantee the control and complete documentation of all temperature ranges, i.e. 2-8°C, -20ºC and -40ºC. Thirdly, the complete security of our facilities was also guaranteed at all times through alarm and CCTV monitoring.’
